New Jersey Association of Firearms Retailers
Hails Firearms Industry Campaign to Stop
Illegally Purchased Firearms from Entering Garden State
NEWARK, NJ --
The New Jersey Association of Firearms Retailers (NJAFR), representing
federally licensed firearms retailers in the Garden State, hailed
the launch of a major anti-straw purchasing campaign designed to
raise awareness among New Jersey residents and visitors of the dangers
and severe penalties associated with illegally straw purchasing firearms.
The
program, called Don't Lie for the Other Guy, was developed by the
National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) – the trade
association for the firearms industry – and the Bureau of Alcohol,
Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to raise public awareness
that it is a serious crime to purchase a firearm for someone who
cannot legally do so or for someone who does not otherwise want his
or her name associated with the purchase.
The program is also designed to educate firearms dealers on how to
better detect and deter potential straw purchases. The campaign,
which has been enhanced to better focus on purchasers who would leave
the state to illegally straw purchase firearms, drives home the message
that anyone attempting an illegal firearm purchase faces a stiff
federal penalty: Buy a gun for someone who can't and buy yourself
10 years in jail.
"New Jersey’s
firearms retailers fully support the Don’t
Lie program," said NJAFR President Bob Viden. "While
the gun laws in New Jersey make straw purchasing firearms nearly
impossible, the strong message to the public about the seriousness
of such an illegal activity is always welcome.
"As federally
licensed firearms retailers, and members of our respective communities,
we want to do everything we can to ensure criminals never acquire
our products."
